When you buy products classed as Dangerous Goods, they come with labelling and documentation that exists to keep you safe. Understanding it takes five minutes and is well worth your time.

GHS pictograms

Since 1 January 2017, Australian chemical labels follow the Globally Harmonised System (GHS). The red-bordered diamonds tell you the main hazards at a glance — flammable, corrosive, toxic, harmful, health hazard, environmental hazard and more.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

The SDS replaced the old MSDS in 2017. It is a standardised document covering safe handling, storage, disposal, physical properties, transport classification and emergency first-aid for a specific product. Keep a hard copy wherever you store or use the chemical so it is on hand in an emergency.

Handling and storage basics

  • Store flammables away from heat, sparks and direct sun.
  • Keep incompatible chemicals (e.g. acids and bleach) apart.
  • Wear the PPE the SDS recommends — usually gloves and eye protection.
  • Keep everything out of reach of children and clearly labelled.
Emergency: In Australia call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26, or for chemical emergencies CHEMCALL 1800 127 406. In a life-threatening emergency call 000.
